Statement on Informed Choice

Who We Are

The Association of Family Cord Blood Banks (AFCBB) is an organization representing the family (private) cord blood banking industry and serves as the voice and advocate in matters of public policy, regulation and in the development of standards by accrediting organizations. The association believes that the foundation of public and private cord blood banking rests upon education of both expectant parents and physicians and upon informed consent.

Association Objectives

  1. Promote education of expectant parents as the basis for informed consent in family cord blood banking and public donation.
  2. Support the development of a strong system of public cord blood banks in order that the option of cord blood stem cell transplants is available to all who need them.
  3. Support cord blood stem cell research in order to make a cord blood stem cell transplantation safer, more effective and to realize its promise in regenerative medicine.
  4. Speak on behalf of its members in matters of public policy, regulation and the development of standards by accrediting organizations.
  5. Foster the adoption of ethical and responsible business practices by its members.
  6. Encourage voluntary accreditation of private cord blood banks in order to promote the adoption of best technical practices within its member banks.

Membership Requirements

The AFCBB requires its members to comply with all applicable governmental agencies and to be accredited by the AABB, FACT or an equivalent and recognized accrediting organization.
